Hello and welcome to my
blog, my name is Fay Stowe and I am a media student at East London University
and I am currently in my last year; for one of my assignments I am looking at
covering an essay around selfies. My essay question is: Discuss the culture and politics
of the ‘selfie’ as a mode of digital mobile photographic practice. Is it a form
of ‘narcissim’?
This blog
will be looking at relatable issues to my essay question; I will be looking at
all aspects of selfies, mobile media and I will be looking closely at theorist
Sigmund Freud who has developed work on narcissism.

My very own selfie |
I wont
deceive you I have an instagram account and I am guilty of a few good old
selfies; if I have to be totally honest about my reasons behind my selfies, it
is simply to show a presentable picture of myself, yes one where I believe I
look quiet nice, obviously it is my account and so people who are following me
are going to expect a picture of my face once in a while…Surely? Well I do not
believe my selfies are a form of narcissism, I feel that they are more so a
form of reassurance, as when you get a good response to your picture it makes
you feel better about yourself. However, there is a fine line as some people
edit and photoshop there photos just to receive the positive likes and remarks
that will make them feel better, I feel that putting up an unnatural selfie is
more so a form of narcissim then putting up a natural one however, we will be
looking into these questions, further on throughout this blog.
